(1978) Richie’s second solo attempt was produced by Jim Mason (Firefall and Poco’s A Good Feelin’ To Know). It features some of Richie’s friends: Chris Hillman, Rusty Young, Timothy B. Schmit and many others. On this album, Richie also covers “This Magic Moment,” written by Doc Pomus and pianist Mort Shuman.
“Though recorded by what was technically a Christian rock group, the Richie Furay band’s Dance a Little Light is a far cry from the heavy-handed, musically inept evangelizing often associated with the genre. Despite his then-recent born-again status, Furay was still the same guy who played a pivotal role in two of the most important and influential country-rock bands of all time, Poco and Buffalo Springfield. Consequently, this record is characterized by the same soaring, spot-on harmonies, easy-flowing feeling, and tight ensemble playing that characterized the best work of his former groups. In fact, many of the songs here could easily be outtakes from a classic Jackson Browne or Eagles album (and in fact, latter-day Eagles bassist Timothy B. Schmit guests on several tracks). Really, the only evidence of Furay’s newfound lifestyle is the overwhelmingly positive attitude of the songs and the occasional vague lyrical reference to a life-changing experience. The best track is the closer, “Stand Your Ground,” which is perhaps the best Poco song Poco never recorded and includes great work from ex-bandmates Schmit and pedal steel genius Rusty Young. Other highlights include an exuberant southern California-ized version of Doc Pomus and Mort Schuman’s classic “This Magic Moment” and “Your Friends,” which finds a wizened Furay singing what could be seen as an impetus for his personal transformation: “When you’re down and out/There ain’t a friend in the world that’ll help you out/But when you get on your feet again/Everyone will want to be your friend.” Overall, Furay’s natural, joyous, and human approach to music-making throughout the album places Dance a Little Light among his most convincing work.” ~ Pemberton Roach
IT’S YOUR LOVE
Lyrics: Richie Furay
Music: Richie Furay & Virgil Beckham
I’m in love, no mistaken
I feel that my life, has just awaken
It’s Your Love that keeps me goin’
I finally found some one that I
Could give my heart to and know then
We were givin’ it a try
Oh, little Darlin’,
Oh, am I goin’ out of my mind
Nothin’ doin’,
I just love this feelin’ of me and you and
Takin’ time for each other – and you know that means a lot
I couldn’t love any other – I know what I got
It’s Your Love that keeps me goin’
Day by day, it’s growin’
I fell in love without knowin’
I guess it’s just your way of showin’ … …
YOUR FRIENDS
Words and Music: Henry Booth
Your Friends, all of your friends
All of your friends, all of your friends
You know when you get on your feet again
Everyone will want to be your friend
Yeah, when you get on your feet again
Everyone will want to be your friend
Everyone will want to shake your hand
Everyone will want to see you again
They’ll all pat you on your back
Smile and tell you that they’re glad you’re back
Yeah, when you get on your feet again
Everyone will want to be your friend
But when you’re down and out
There ain’t a friend in the world, that’ll help you out
But when you get on your feet again
Everyone will want to be your friend
Yeah, when you get on your feet again
Everyone will want to be your friend
They’ll tell you that they’ll stand by you –
Never let you down
But when you start sinkin’ low –
There isn’t one of your friends to be found
Yeah when your ship comes in,
Surprise all of you’re so called friends
Give them – give them a helping hand
Show them all that you’re a bigger man
OOOH DREAMER
Lyrics: Richie Furay
Music: Richie Furay & David Diggs
What’s goin’ on, all my dreams at night
Seem to say I love you, you’re a part of my life
It’s more than admire
You’re the heartbeat I feel in desire
With every little moment passin’ by
I think of you
Ummm, do I love you – I do
Whenever I find myself in a bind
You’re all that’ll do
I know I was right
Lo and behold it was love at first sight
I’m reachin’ out, oooh I need you
Ooooh am I a dreamer
Is there more than meets the eye
It’s lookin’ so good, I hardly believe it, my-my
I’ll never forget it, or ever regret it,
You gave me wings to fly
I’m gonna take on off and let You know I’m alive,
I’m gonna fly
Ooooh Dreamer
YESTERDAY’S GONE
Lyrics: Richie Furay
Music: Richie Furay & Virgil Beckham
Yesterday’s gone, but we can still carry on
A few of the memories left behind
Like an old-timey song
An old sing-a-long
You know it, ‘cause you heard it before
Now listen closer – yeah that’s it for sure
I couldn’t forget it – forever more
I heard it playin’ on the radio
An ooooh – wouldn’t you know
It made me feel like I might’ve back then
Whatever that means I guess it’s fun to pretend
And meantime, I tell you that I’m waitin’, waitin’ to hear
That song they keep playin’ year after year
It made sweet music to my ear
I love what I hear
It made sweet music to my ear – oooh
It made sweet music to my hear – listen here
It made sweet music to me ear
SOMEONE WHO CARES
Written by: Richie Furay
Open your eyes and see
This feelin’ could be forever
And I know that the love you’re hidin’ could be
More than the smile you’re givin’
There’s more in your life than you’re livin’
And for all of the treasures of love, your heart holds the key
What will the season’s bring you
Where will tomorrow leave you
You can be sure there’s Someone Who Cares
You’ve never seen me cryin’
But I’ve had a heart that was dying’
You can be sure there’s Someone Who Cares
I’ve got to live for the laughter
It’s the broken hearted one’s that I’m after
Who hold to each day like the sun never shines
You’ve never seen me cryin’
But I’ve had a heart that was dying’
You can be sure there’s Someone Who Cares
Open your eyes and see
This feelin’ could be forever
‘Cause I’ve known the love you’re hidin’ – you see
What will the season’s bring you
Where will tomorrow leave you
You can be sure there’s Someone Who Cares
You’ve never seen me cryin’
But I’ve had a heart that was dying’
You can be sure there’s Someone Who Cares
What the season’s will bring you
And where will tomorrow will leave you
You can be sure there’s Someone Who Cares
DANCE A LITTLE LIGHT
Lyrics: Richie Furay
Music: Richie Furay & David Diggs
(I’m) shoutin’ about it
There’s reason enough to be
Honey, Honey you’ll see
There’s no doubt about it
It’s easy what I’m gonna do
Oh – Dance A Little Light On You
You can live forever, forever and a day
Just say it whenever, ain’t no takin’ it away
Oooooh I believe you hear me callin’
Sounds a bit like “good news”
Oooooh – it’ll Dance A little Light On You
BITTERSWEET LOVE
Written by: Richie Furay
It suddenly caught me and I’m doin’ it again
Wonderin’ why, you and I can’t be friends
Oh but then
If you tried
It seems I’d have known when
But there ain’t no more
You’ve shut the door
It’s the end
Of a Bittersweet Love, one that called us to play
But we had cryin’ and sighin’ every day
Bittersweet Love, how we fell to it’s prey
I know that cryin’ and sighin’ ain’t the way
Oh Baby, maybe we’ll understand
Where the love we saw, dreams and all – fit in the plan
YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT
Lyrics: Richie Furay
Music: Richie Furay & Tom Stipe
Ooooh Baby, I couldn’t be more in love than I am with you
I’m satisfied, just knowin’ that I’ve
Got a woman to love me, and Lord I sure do thank You, yes I do
She’s one of a kind, and whoa – she’s mine
I’ll be in love and always,
Ummm on that you can be sure
What can I say when I feel this way
And whoa, oh each day I love you more and more
You stand out – look out
Whoa now, You Better Believe It
‘Cause I love you
Whoa now, I feel it somehow – you know I do
Love you Baby – I love you Baby, I do, love you
Whoa now, You Better Believe It – it’s true
Ooooh Baby, I couldn’t be more in love than I am with you
I’m satisfied, just knowin’ that I’ve
Got a woman to love me, and Lord I sure do thank You for mine – I do
She’s one of a kind, and whoa
Whoa now, You Better Believe It
‘Cause I love you
Whoa now, I feel it somehow – you know I do
Love you Baby – I love you Baby, I do, love you
Whoa now, You Better Believe It – it’s true
Whoa now, You Better Believe It – ‘cause I love you
Whoa now, You Better Believe It It’s true, say you do
Whoa now, You Better Believe It love me do
Whoa now, You Better Believe It it’s true
Whoa now, You Better Believe It – it’s true
Whoa now, You Better Believe It
