I’ve seen Richie three times, all In the Twin Cities. The first time was with Poco at the Minneapolis Armory in ’72. All I can say is they were awsome!! The next time I saw him was at Target Center in 2005, during Loggins and Messina’s acoustic portion of the show. Let me tell you, I almost fell off my seat. L & M started playing “Kind Woman” and shortly after the start of the song you hear this third voice join them from out of no where and on to the stage strolls Richie. He stayed with them for 3-4 more songs including :”You Better Think Twice” I could have died happy right there. The next time I saw him was with his worship band at the Fine Line. His warm up act was Chris Hillman and Herb Pederson – a hard act to follow but he kicked butt. It was at that show that Richie let the secret out that Jim Messina open tuned his guitar to get that wonderful lick for “You Better Think Twice”. It took me over twenty years of trying to learn that lick and once the secret was revealed I learned it in a day. I’ve always loved his voice and have owned all the Springfield LPs and Poco LPs on which he played. I hope I can see him again with the reformed Springfield sometime in the near future. Rock on Richie!
I saw Richie and his band at a the Narrows Performing Arts Center in Fall River , Mass, a few years ago. They were excellent! I got to talk to Richie. He is the kind of person I thought he’d be – upbeat, energetic and personable. As I was coming of age in the 60′s, I became a fan of Buffalo Springfield and Poco. Their influence, and of course that of the Beatles, inspired me to play guitar. I’m still playing ‘Go And Say Goodbye’, ‘On The Way Home’, ‘Kind Woman’ and others from that wonderful time. Thanks Richie!
I saw Ritchie with Messina and Schmidt at a free concert on the Fenway in Boston back in 1970. He blew me away as did the band. From what i can hear from youtube, BS was spectacular at Bonaroo. I’ve never seen Stills and Young so good, and hearing Richie sing those songs again – wow. Your family band is awesome, I have daughters that sing and I know the joy. Wishing you all most success, and gee I hope i get to see the Springfield here in the Boston area sometime before I die!
